Shirley Booth's most famous recurring radio role began on March 1, 1941. She played Miss Duffy on Duffy's Tavern. For three seasons, the first two on CBS Radio and for one on the NBC Blue Radio Network, Shirley lent her Brooklynese voice to the irrepressibly funny and light-hearted Miss Duffy, the cashier daughter of the unseen owner of the tavern. At the same time she was acting on Broadway playing aspiring writer Ruth Sherwood in My Sister Eileen.
Her first husband Ed Gardner opened Duffy's Tavern: "Hello, Duffy's Tavern, where the elite meet to eat, Archie da manager speaking,' Duffy ain't here....Oh Hello, Duffy." The theme song "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling" played.
Only two radio shows with Shirley still survive. One dated March 23, 1943 has Susan Hayward and Frank Buck as the guests. The other one from June 15, 1943 has Clifton Fadiman as guest star. An excerpt of the latter appears in my biography.
Both episodes were broadcast on Max Schmid's Golden Age of Radio program on WBAI 99.5 several years ago. It was a guest-hosted tribute to Shirley Booth offered by Donna Manago.

Shirley's last appearance on the show occurred on June 29, 1943. Her marriage to Gardner had fallen apart. Gardner had asked for a divorce because he loved another woman. It was granted in August of 1943.

Shirley Booth volunteered as a nightly hostess. Of course, she still maintained her aversion to alcohol. Shirley told Earl Wilson: "I'm the girl that's always afraid somebody's going to ask her to take a drink."
Shirley often jitterbugged with the famous Coast Guard sailor known as "Killer Joe." He became known for tossing the women over his head. At 116 pounds, Shirley found that it kept her hips in shape....
