Hal Holbrook Appeared With Shirley Booth In THE GLASS MENAGERIE!

Today is Hal Holbrook's 87th birthday...HAPPY BIRTHDAY HAL!

Hal is known for many fine productions, in particular his Mark Twain Tonight. Last year I had the pleasure of watching his enjoyable one-man show on videotape, which was originally broadcast on CBS in 1967.

Most notably, Holbrook appeared with Shirley Booth in the television production of Tennessee Williams' The Glass Menagerie, broadcast December 8, 1966.

Shirley Booth played Amanda Wingfield in the CBS Playhouse adaptation. This two-hour television special, filmed at Rediffusion Television Ltd. in London, had Holbrook as Amanda’s son Tom, Barbara Loden as Amanda’s crippled daughter, and Pat Hingle as the gentleman caller.

Shirley Booth told Kay Gardella: "At first I wasn’t enthusiastic about doing The Glass Menagerie. Frankly, I had misgivings about myself. I didn’t think that anybody else could approximate the performance given by Laurette Taylor in the original Broadway version. Eventually, however, I let myself be talked into it."

Shirley explained: "Amanda is a challenging character to portray. She’s a mother of many facets, more gallant than possessive. I was in perfect agreement with Laurette Taylor’s interpretation of the role. I tried to make my own performance as clear as she did."

However, British director Michael Elliot did not like the way Shirley played Amanda. She did not play the character with the sizzle and energy that Eliot thought the Southern belle should have. Nevertheless, Shirley was nominated for an Emmy for her superb performance.
