ANNIVERSARY TODAY:
February 4, 1951 - Shirley did a radio version of Come Back, Little Sheba in the United States Steel Hour production of Theatre Guild on the Air. The contract that playwright William Inge signed giving permission to make a radio show of "Come Back, Little Sheba" was sold last year by www.galleryofhistory.com.
Yesterday I missed mentioning the anniversary of cabaret singer Mabel Mercer (February 3, 1900 – April 20, 1984). It was actress Martha Randall Carson who told me in an interview that every time Shirley Booth came into a club where Mabel Mercer was performing, Mercer would sing "Bill" in tribute Shirley's beloved Bill. Of course, Shirley's Bill is Bill Baker - the subject of my latest book (For Bill, His Pinup Girl: The Shirley Booth and Bill Baker Story, published in December 2010). Yes it's a bittersweet story - but one every Shirley Booth fan would enjoy!

The awesome talent of Karen Carpenter sadly departed from us on this day - yes, now twenty-nine years ago (February 4, 1983).
Karen's crystal clear vocalizing is quite magical! She had the most beautiful voice of any singer ever heard. She conveyed so much feeling in her singing. Besides, she recorded without benefiting from the audio technology so often heavily relied on these days!

In episode #95 ("Arrivederci, Mr.B ") George Baxter says about Hazel: "I tell you Hazel could walk three blocks from a grocery store and pick up enough information to fill an FBI file. She's an unconscious detective. The only difference is a detective calls it 'digging out the facts of a case" and Hazel calls it "a friendly interest in folks."
