Last year Catherine Campaigne, Bill Baker, Jr.'s niece got in touch with me after learning about my book on Shirley Booth's marriage to her Uncle Bill. She sent me some goodies including the following handwritten note from Shirley Booth written on a page of Bill's typed poem called "Morning Pastoral." At the time this was note was sent, Bill was serving in the 100th Division's drive to push the Nazis out of France.

Catherine has provided more photos and information, some of which I will be sharing with you...

Feb. 17 - 1945

Dear Sir:

This verse was written by my husband now stationed overseas. But I couldn't resist sending them to you for I think with justifiable wifely pride that they are truly worthy of your consideration.
Thanking you I am most
Sincerely Yours

"The chill morning half light begins to lift the awful hiding blackness of last night which fell to cloak the final stages of a furious encounter...."

opening line to "Morning Pastoral" by Bill Baker, Jr., 1945

Bill's fascinating poem expressing his experience of the horrors of war will appear in a forthcoming blog post...STAY TUNED!
