ANNIVERSARY TODAY:
January 26, 1925 - On stage: Hell’s Bells opens on Broadway 87 years ago today. This is Shirley's first Broadway show, and in the cast was the then equally unknown Humphrey Bogart.

Shirley Booth made her Broadway debut on January 26, 1925 in an original play called Hell’s Bells, written by Barry Conners. She played Nan Winchester, one of two unconcerned sisters, going through an about-face when they believe their adventurer brother is now prosperous.
Shirley appeared in this supporting role as a slim ingénue cast opposite her love interest; namely, the character of Jimmy Todhunter, played by Humphrey Bogart. What did Shirley Booth have to say about Bogart? My book, Love is the Reason for it All: The Shirley Booth Story, reveals her one pertinent critical comment of the legendary Bogart.
Hell’s Bells ran for only four months with 120 performances at the Wallack’s Theatre. The New York Times reviewer noted that although many found it quite funny on opening night, it is "much funnier in the imagination. . . . The piece is of the stage, stagey. Its situations are artificial . . . Humphrey Bogart, Shirley Booth and Olive May did their best with stock roles."
Even though she did get second lead in the shows that followed Hell’s Bells, Shirley Booth continued to go on the road acting in every possible role in stock theater productions. Thus, she alternated between starring roles in stock theater with supporting player parts.

Hazel says...
In episode #85 ("Scheherezade and Her Frying Pan, Part One"), Hazel's friend Gracie (Linda Watkins) discovers she's working for gangsters, and refuses cooking for them. Hazel prepares for them saying: "I got ideals too, but you got to be practical. If you're gonna tame a wild animal you got to feed it."
