Happy Birthday To TIPPI HEDREN!

ANNIVERSARY TODAY:

Actress Tippi Hedren was born today in 1930. Birthday Greetings to Tippi!

*****

Tippi is best known for starring in two very enjoyable Alfred Hitchcock films, The Birds (1963) and Marnie (1964). Both films are among Hitchcock's best...and it's Tippi's glances and charming mannerisms throughout those films that make them hold up so well. Unfortunately, I am disappointed to learn that Hitchcock did not treat Tippi and other actresses respectfully.

I know that Marnie has received some criticism for the artificiality of some of the sequences, particularly the fake-looking back-projection shots. But, if you see them as intentionally expressionistic, as I believe Hitchcock intended them, then you will note that he was drawing on his roots in German expressionism from the 1920's. I believe that Marnie is a complex film deserving multiple screenings since Hitchcock was doing something more here than just giving us a realistic suspense yarn.

In recent years, Tippi has been quite active in helping to educate the public about exotic animals, as well as giving a permanent home to neglected and mistreated exotics at Shambala Preserve. I must say a public "THANK YOU TIPPI HEDREN FOR CARING!"

Gene MacLellan, the Canadian singer-songwriter died tragically on this day in 1995 (Born February 2, 1938)). One of his best contributions was writing the hit song called "Put Your Hand in the Hand." The gospel rock group Ocean made it a big hit in the 1970's. The great back-beat drumming that opens this song is quite memorable. This song certainly grabs you with catchy lyrics and a upbeat energy. Thanks to Gene for writing this song!

I received many, many visitors to my blog posts every time I say anything about Gene. I know that he is missed and loved by so many people, especially our neighbors in Canada!

Yesterday I overlooked the great Oliver Hardy on his birthday (January 18, 1892 - August 7, 1957). One of best aspects of his insanely funny films is his singing which makes those Laurel & Hardy films real treasures! As a sample, listen to the song "Ideal of My Dreams.," which can be heard at the Internet Archive. It is mistakenly named by the uploader as "I Love You."
