Frederica Maas Said It Best: "Suicide Is A Copout...No One Worth Their Salt Has The Right To Inflict Such Punishment On The Ones They LOVE!"

July 6, 1900 - January 5, 1912: Screenwriter/playwright Frederica Sagor Maas, the third oldest person in the State of California has died. She lived 111 years and 183 days. May she rest in peace. Condolences are offered to all of her friends and family.

I can tell you that my wife and I had the distinct pleasure of meeting the amazing Frederica Sagor Maas in 2000 when she was a mere 100 years old. It was at an appearance she made at the Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria, New York. Not only did she speak so beautifully of her life, but we were treated to seeing one of her films that she scripted - the 1925 Clara Bow classic, The Plastic Age.

Eleven years went by and we never gave it a thought that Frederica would still be alive. A few months ago while clearing through a number of clippings, we found the program that she signed for that tribute to her.

Well we were intensely delighted and excited to learn that Frederica was still alive – and that she continued to make history. This is an open note to her that we posted on her last birthday:

Dear Frederica,
We met you back in 2000 at the tribute offered to you at The Museum of the Moving Image. Recently we discovered the program that you signed for us. We were truly happily surprised that you are still with us. That has spurred us to finally obtain and read your fascinating memoir (The Shocking Miss Pilgrim: A Writer in Early Hollywood). In short, we still treasure that brief meeting back then when you were a mere 100 years old. Today we both wish that we could meet you again as you celebrate your 111th birthday. Since this is not possible, please accept our sincere wishes that you enjoy this very special occasion. We hope you will enjoy every single day that you are with us as you continue to make history!!!Happy Birthday!

Best wishes,

Jim and Donna Manago

Frederica wrote in her book ("The Shocking Miss Pilgrim") that the tough times in her life made her want to end it all - but she fortunately changed her mind. Maas said it best: "Suicide is a copout. The real victims are those who are left behind to harbor guilt and grief. No one worth their salt has the right to inflict such punishment on the ones they love.” (p.208)
Maas (with her husband together) were close to ending their life when they came to realize: "What were we doing? Failure, disappointments, lack of money, humiliation – none of these things mattered. We had each other, and we were alive." (p.251)
