Today I am repeating this interview first published in January of 2011.

Lyricist Chuck Steffan agreed to answer some of my questions regarding the forthcoming Broadway musical, Hazel. This is the first part of that interview...

Jim Manago: When and how did you each come to make the decision to do a musical about Hazel?

Chuck Steffan
: Ron Abel and I were discussing setting up our wish list of characters and stories we would like to explore writing as stage musicals. Among the short-list was the Ted Key's wonderful character of Hazel.

Jim Manago
: Will the musical be faithful to the original characteristics as outlined by Ted Key in his "Hazel Bible" or based on any of the TV show episodes. Will the character be given a new setting/time period/characteristics?

Chuck Steffan: We are being gracious to the original character in our interpretation since that is what makes us all love her so much. The story is set in the early sixties at the Baxter household and with many recognizable features but the storyline is completely original and not based on any of the episodes in the television series. After all, this is Hazel's debut on Broadway and "she" told us she wanted to have a brand new storyline, great lighting and be 5 pounds thinner!

Jim Manago
: How well do you recall the television show?

Chuck Steffan: Well Ron, Lissa and I were all pretty young when the series premiered but we were immersed in Hazel's history and characteristics for a very long time before beginning this journey.

Jim Manago: Is this to be an off-off-Broadway show first? What is the time-line for it?

Chuck Steffan: No, our goal for Hazel as a stage musical is and always has been Broadway-bound. I mean, where else would America's favorite maid feel more at home but in a palatial Broadway theatre where the historically dusty dressing rooms could use a good swipe of her feather duster! We anticipate Hazel to be in shape and ready for the preliminary workshop production schedule by early next year.

Jim Manago
: What will be the purpose of the musical: to entertain, inspire, rekindle memories of the TV show, or whatever?

Chuck Steffan: We, of course, would like to satisfy all those purposes as well as be melodically tuneful and fun.
